Rock bay x Hillside ave Victoria BC

Kracken is a multi media mural installed at the Wheelies Cafe parking lot in Rock Bay. This mural runs adjacent to the Rock Bay mural featuring the Arbutus tree.

The Kracken mural features a chart of Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast in detail with the mythical Kracken painted over top. As a kid I grew up on a commercial fishing boat where there was an old marine chart embedded in epoxy resin in the galley table. During the long hours on the boat I would spend a lot of time at that table fantasizing about what creatures could be living in the inlets and on the islands featured on that chart. The Kracken being one of them.

This mural was my first large scale solo project in Victoria BC. It is painted on a wing of Centennial United Church which is located in the district of Rock Bay, near one of the cities Homeless shelters. In this piece I wanted to represent the story of the great flood from my Nation. The W’SANEC people here also share a story of the great flood, where their people tied their canoes to a great Arbutus tree at the top of a hill. The design also has a tertiary representation as it also represents the flood referenced in the story of Noah and the Ark from Christian stories. Given the location of this piece I wanted the story depicted to provide some reflection on the intersectionality of stories in our shared history.

On The Land was a collaborative mural project between myself, Open Space, Uumati, Dahlila Charlie, and Eli Gloor.

My Installation titled “Grandmas Flowers” is found in the top section of the mural.

Inspired by the incredible athleticism of our local birds and insects and how they go about our world. This park has excellent wildlife diversity for being in a relatively urban location. The idea here was in part to acknowledge the gifts of the animals where so many young human athletes find their own. To acknowledge those who often go unnoticed. This project was also an opportunity to celebrate as well as create space for collaboration with the W’SANEC people who have been here since time immemorial.

As a Métis artist it’s important to uphold the local protocol of our host nations. We as a people have always lived on the land of other Indigenous people. Through murals like this the intention is to create an opportunity to share space in a good way and hopefully develop more opportunities for representation.

This was my first time trying something semi realistic in spray paint. Thanks to the Municipality of Saanich for the opportunity.

Nakoshiw - Emerge

Painted at 901 10th Avenue SW in Calgary Alberta

This piece was created to reflect the emergence of a new generation of Métis and Métis artists reconnecting with their culture, homelands, medicines, and Kin. Riel is often referenced and quoted when it comes to the emergence and depiction of our people. In this mural I wanted to reference my Cousin Valarie Campbell as a young matriarch.

The grey pallet is a reference to a glacial erratic deposit known as Big Rock near Okotoks. Given that this rock originated in the Gog formation of the rocky mountains during the great uplift and came to where it sits now from massive glacial movement It seemed like a good reference for the Métis diaspora. We have blood from many nations and have always lived on the lands of other indigenous people. In doing so we’ve become a part of many communities and it is our responsibility to work and live in a good way. The circle is lined with beads in the mousetracks pattern to acknowledge this tradition.

Margins

Vancouver x Burdette ave in Victoria BC

Painted for the Victoria Placemaking society. Margins depicts two trees, the Arbutus and Garry Oak, reaching across towards each other in a traffic calming space.

These paintings represent how local endangered ecosystems are under threat from Urban expansion and are pushed into more and more fractured sections.

Between the two traffic calming spaces is a crosswalk which integrates in the branches. The neighbourhood kids love walking along the branches towards the trunks of the trees like a maze.
